The area around Starved Rock State Park is famous for its natural beauty, with towering rock formations, cascading waterfalls and scenic vistas. But the allure of the Illinois River doesn’t stop there. Stretching from Ottawa to Peoria, this region offers a treasure trove of small-town charm, historic sites and cozy retreats that invite you to explore Illinois beyond the city limits.
Day 1: Ottawa and Oglesby/Utica
Kick off your adventure at Starved Rock State Park, the crown jewel of the region. Spend the day hiking through its renowned canyons, scaling the bluffs and soaking in the stunning views. The park’s seasonal waterfalls and diverse trails offer something for every level of hiker. After a day of exploration, unwind with a meal at the rustic Starved Rock Lodge and enjoy the cozy atmosphere.
Day 2: Oglesby/Utica and LaSalle
Start your second day at Matthiessen State Park, just a short drive from Starved Rock. Known for its dramatic rock formations and diverse wildlife, this park is a must-see for nature lovers.
For a unique experience, hop aboard a mule-pulled boat ride along the I&M Canal National Heritage Area. This leisurely ride offers a peaceful way to soak in the area’s natural beauty.
Nearby, the Lock 16 Visitor Center is the perfect spot for a laid-back lunch. Treat yourself to a wine tasting at August Hill Winery and savor locally crafted wines in a picturesque setting.
As you make your way towards Peoria, don’t miss a stop at the historic Red Covered Bridge in Princeton. Built in 1863, this charming bridge is one of the last remaining covered bridges in Illinois and offers a perfect photo opportunity.
End your day with a delicious meal at Spoons Restaurant & Bar, where fresh, locally sourced ingredients take center stage. Spend the night at the Historic Knox Hotel. Once a bustling hub for travelers from the local train depot, the hotel sat empty for decades. But in April 2021, Dane and Kelsey Stier purchased the building and began restoring it to its former glory. With the support of local donors and investors, they’ve re-opened several rooms, and are continuing renovations.
Day 3: Peoria and East Peoria
Your final day brings you to Peoria, where natural beauty meets cultural richness. Begin your day with a visit to the Peoria Zoo or Wildlife Prairie Park, where you can encounter a variety of animals in their natural habitats. If you’re in the mood for something more cultural, the Peoria Riverfront Museum is a multidisciplinary gem offering art exhibits, planetarium shows and more.
For a relaxing afternoon, stroll through the Luthy Botanical Garden, which features a tropical conservatory and seasonal floral displays. Before heading home, take a scenic drive along Grandview Drive—often called the “World’s Most Beautiful Drive” for its breathtaking views.
Cap off your journey with an evening of fun at the Par-A-Dice Casino, or enjoy house-smoked BBQ at The Blue Duck Barbecue Tavern. Both offer a lively atmosphere to end your Illinois River escape on a high note.
