Annual Missouri River 340 - The World's Longest Non-Stop Canoe and Kayak Race

Tue, Jul 15 - Sat, Jul 19

Imagine a race across the entire state of Missouri, just you and your boat thrown against 340 miles of wind, heat, bugs and rain. This ain’t no mama’s boy float trip.

This race promises to test your mettle from the first stroke in Kansas City to the last gasp in St. Charles. Just entering it will impress your friends. Finishing it will astound them… and winning it? Well, you always thought you were sort of a legend anyway, didn’t you? It’s time to prove it.

The Missouri 340 is an endurance race across the state of Missouri. Competitors will start in Kansas City and finish, some of them anyway, in St. Charles. With numerous towns and hamlets, the course offers plenty of opportunity for resupply while enroute. The Missouri River is also incredibly scenic and isolated in some stretches, with wildlife and beautiful vistas to rival any river in North America. But if you're trying to win this race, you won't have time to enjoy  any of it.

Participants are allowed exactly 100 hours to complete the course.  There are nine checkpoints along the route where paddlers are required to sign in and sign out. Cutoff times will be associated with these checkpoints based on the 100 hour pace. Failure to miss two consecutive deadlines is grounds for disqualification. To finish this race in 100 hours is a huge accomplishment. Only 2/3 of the teams were able to do that last year.

There are no dams, locks or portages on this stretch of the Missouri. You could, conceivably, finish this race without ever having left your  boat. (We don't recommend it.) This doesn't mean that the race is without danger. Any time you put yourself on the water, especially  moving water, you assume a certain amount of risk. The Missouri 340 course is all on Class I water. The current is about 3 mph and there are no rapids. The biggest hazard to paddlers would be motorboats, mostly fisherman, and the occasional towboat pushing barges. In river obstacles would include wing dikes, buoys and bridge pilings.

Thanks to the United States Coast Guard, the river is marked over the entire course with mileage and channel markers. It is almost impossible not to know, within a mile or less, your exact location. At the pre-race meeting and safety check, racers will be briefed on how to read these markers, how to handle a tow and barge passage and what constitutes public property on the river. Paddlers will also be provided with a racing guide that includes available services in towns, emergency phone numbers, etc.

Festival of Faiths and Cultures

Sat, Sep 06

The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows is hosting its annual Festival of Faiths and Cultures, which offers food, music, and fun while celebrating diversity in the global community. Children are included in the celebration as well, since the Children's Village is offering minature horse rides, Henna tattoos, Native American storytelling, and tons of other hands-on learning experiences to broaden their horizons in addition to entertaining.

Vendors will also be on hand to sell souvenirs and gifts from across the globe, but the feature that makes this celebration unique is the Interfaith Learning Center, where representatives from a spectrum of beliefs will be tabling and answering questions that curious passers-by may have. No proseltyzing is allowed, so visitors are encouraged to ask any questions they may have about any faith.

The best part about the spectrum of events offered? Admission is free, and the celebration runs all day long.

Foundry Art Centre: The Big Read

Sun, Feb 01 - Sat, Feb 28

Foundry Art Centre and St. Charles City/County Library District to Host The Big Read in February 2009

The Foundry Art Centre received a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts to host The Big Read, a national initiative to promote literary reading. The Big Read will take place in St. Charles and surrounding communities beginning Feb. 1, 2009, and continuing throughout the entire month. Kick-off date for The Big Read is Sunday Feb. 1, 2009, at the Foundry Art Centre. Festivities include a personal appearance of the Gateway Sled Dogs, and a concert performed by the St. Charles County Symphony.

To ensure better community participation, the Foundry Art Centre, in partnership with St. Charles Library District City/County, has developed programs and activities centering on the selected novel, 'Call of the Wild,' by author Jack London.  The National Endowment for the Arts, in partnership with Arts Midwest, a regional arts organization based in Minneapolis, provided nationwide participating communities organizational guides, reader’s guides and technical assistance to facilitate and implement The Big Read on a local level.

Activities simultaneous with reading of Call of the Wild will take place the entire month of February 2009 and include a read-out-loud marathon with local celebrities and community leaders, a film series, book-making workshops, book discussions, and a tour of the Wild Canid Survival and Research Center.  The Foundry Art Centre and the Library District are in the final planning stages of related activities.

Locally, Ameren UE, the City of Cottleville, City of St. Charles Arts and Culture Commission, and Hazelwood and Weber LLC are sponsoring The Big Read.

Governor Matt Blunt, along with Representatives David Day, Billy Pat Wright, Ellen Brandom, Kathlyn Fares, Sally Faith,Jane Cunningham, Joe Smith and Maynard Wallace have joined The Big Read to help encourage a nation of active readers and thinkers.  (photo attached)

A quote from NEA Chairman Dana Gioia states, “The NEA’s landmark 2004 study, Reading at Risk, showed that literary reading in the U.S. is in steep decline.  No single program can entirely reverse this trend, but if cities nationally unite to adopt The Big Read, our community-wide reading program, together we can restore reading to its essential place in American culture.”
